“Simon Fraser University granted probationary membership by Canada West”

Date:

The Canada West conference of U Sports has granted probationary membership to Simon Fraser University after a decision made during the conference’s yearly meeting. SFU’s comeback to Canadian collegiate sports depends on receiving U Sports’ approval at the annual meeting scheduled from June 2 to June 4 in St. John’s. If given the green light, SFU’s men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, indoor track and field, soccer, swimming, and wrestling teams will participate in Canada West starting from the 2027-28 season. The conference has indicated that SFU’s women’s volleyball team has not yet received approval. Situated in Burnaby, within Metro Vancouver, SFU will continue its involvement in the NCAA Division II Great Northwest Athletic Conference for the 2026-27 season. Previously, SFU competed in Canada West from 2000 to 2010 before transitioning to the NCAA, becoming the only Canadian institution to join the U.S. collegiate system.
