EMT instructor Karl Arps suffered a heart attack while demonstrating CPR signs during a training session at Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton, Wis. Students sprang into action upon realizing the severity of the situation, following CPR protocols they had learned in class. Arps expressed profound gratitude for the students’ quick response, acknowledging that their actions saved his life.
One of the students, Logan Lehrer, a firefighter training as an Emergency Medical Technician, vividly recalls the moment he recognized Arps was in distress. Lehrer’s prompt actions, along with the coordinated efforts of the students and another instructor, Traci Blondeau, were crucial in providing immediate care to Arps. The group worked together seamlessly, with Lehrer praising their preparedness and focus during the emergency.
Emergency services arrived promptly, further contributing to Arps’s positive outcome. According to Gold Cross Ambulance’s executive director, Nick Romenesko, the swift recognition of cardiac arrest and the students’ effective response significantly impacted Arps’s survival chances, highlighting the importance of bystander CPR and defibrillator use in such situations.
Following triple-bypass surgery, Arps expressed his disbelief at surviving the ordeal and is eager to return to work after a few months of recovery. He visited the school to personally thank his students, emphasizing the value of their attentiveness during his teachings. Lehrer reflected on the experience, noting the importance of maintaining composure in emergencies and the reassurance that comes from knowing students absorb and apply life-saving skills taught in class.
