Tragic Shooting Claims Life of Beloved Hamilton Student

Date:

Last Friday afternoon, Nabil Askafe, a 16-year-old student at Westdale Secondary School in Hamilton, received a call from a friend and informed his mother before leaving home. Despite his mother’s suggestion to eat before heading out, Askafe declined, promising to return soon. Tragically, that was the last time his mother saw him.

Askafe was fatally shot at Jackson Square mall in downtown Hamilton on April 24, shortly after leaving his house. According to the police, a minor altercation escalated into a larger conflict, resulting in Askafe’s death. A 14-year-old boy turned himself in and was charged with second-degree murder the following Sunday.

Hala Tatish, Askafe’s mother, described her son as a loving and humorous individual who had aspirations of exploring life and pursuing a career in law enforcement. Askafe, a Grade 11 student, had dreams of traveling to Germany and Dubai, eager to grow older and embrace life’s experiences.

Tatish and her husband fled war-torn Syria in 2016, seeking a safer environment to raise their four children, with Askafe being the eldest. The family’s hopes for a better future were shattered by the tragic loss of Askafe, leaving them devastated and uncertain about their safety in Canada.

As the family mourns, they are calling for increased safety measures in the community to protect all children. Tatish and Mazen Askafe, Nabil’s father, emphasized the need for action to prevent similar tragedies and ensure a safer environment for youth.

Amidst the grief, community members have come together to support the Askafe family, attending vigils and offering condolences. A fundraiser has been initiated to assist the family during this difficult time, reflecting the outpouring of love and support from those who knew and cherished Nabil Askafe.

The family’s home is filled with flowers brought by well-wishers, symbolizing the love and compassion extended to them during their time of sorrow. While grappling with their loss, the Askafe family is grateful for the overwhelming support they have received from both known and unknown individuals.

As the investigation continues, the community remains united in remembrance of Nabil Askafe, a vibrant young life lost too soon. The family hopes that their tragedy will spark meaningful change to protect the youth and prevent future senseless acts of violence.
