“Tree-Planting Hero Fights to Restore Forests Amid Program Cancellation”

Date:

Marley Moose, a 22-year-old participant, is in her third summer engaged in tree-planting efforts in northern Manitoba to aid in the restoration of forests ravaged by wildfires. The task has become more arduous due to the discontinuation of a government initiative targeting the planting of two billion trees by 2030.

The landscape around Moose, once lush with life, now lies scorched, prompting her and the team to breathe life into these desolate areas by carefully planting jack pine and black spruce saplings. The forest in Manitoba’s Interlake region, previously hit by a jack pine budworm outbreak in 2016, was starting to recover before being consumed by wildfires in the Devils Lake vicinity in 2021.

The cancellation of the federal 2 Billion Trees Program has placed projects like the one Moose is part of at risk. This termination means that only half of the original tree-planting target will be achieved, coinciding with a period of recurring wildfires, according to Doug Hevenor, the executive director of the Canadian Tree Nursery Association (CTNA).

Hevenor highlighted the challenges faced by the forestry sector, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts among seed producers, foresters, and tree planters to counter the impact of the program’s cancellation. The Blue-Green Planet Project, represented by project manager Farron Sharp, is actively seeking alternative funding sources to sustain its tree-planting initiatives and meet ambitious reforestation goals.

Despite the physical demands of tree-planting, Moose and her team remain committed to the cause, driven by a vision of ensuring future generations can enjoy thriving forests. The significance of funding such endeavors is underscored by their role in mitigating environmental damage caused by human activities and natural disasters like wildfires.
