A father in Calgary has been accused of two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the tragic deaths of his two children, discovered in a vehicle in the city’s northwest area. The victims, a five-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl, were identified by the Calgary Police Service on Friday.
The 37-year-old man appeared before a justice of the peace in Calgary, where the Crown requested a publication ban on revealing the identities of the children and the accused individual. The police confirmed that the accused had contacted 911, disclosing that he had harmed his children and providing his location.
The father was taken into custody by officers who found the deceased children in the vehicle. Investigations revealed that the children’s parents had shared custody after ending their six-year common-law relationship a year ago. Despite previous police visits to their shared residence, no charges had been filed.
The accused is scheduled to appear in court again on Monday. Autopsies on the victims are underway. Meanwhile, members of Calgary’s Eritrean community gathered at a local church to mourn the children and show support to their mother during this tragic time. Community leaders emphasized the importance of coming together to provide assistance and comfort to those affected by the heartbreaking incident.
