“Iran Confirmed for World Cup Amid US Relations Tensions”

Date:

FIFA’s President, Gianni Infantino, has confirmed that Iran will be participating in the World Cup games in the United States this summer, despite existing tensions between the two nations. Speaking at the 76th FIFA Congress in Vancouver, Infantino emphasized the unifying power of soccer and the importance of fostering unity through the sport.

Addressing the attendees, Infantino stressed the collective responsibility to bring people together, highlighting football as a unifying force that transcends boundaries. He emphasized the positive impact of unity in a world filled with challenges and divisions, urging for a collective effort towards harmony.

Iran, the only FIFA member absent from the Congress, faced logistical issues as Mehdi Taj, the head of the country’s soccer body, had his visa revoked due to ties with a designated terrorist entity in Canada. Despite this setback, Iran, ranked 21st by FIFA, is set to compete in Group G at the upcoming World Cup alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand.

The tournament, featuring an expanded 48-team format, will be jointly hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. With 104 matches across 16 cities, including Vancouver and Toronto, the World Cup promises to be a globally celebrated event. Iran’s matches are scheduled to take place in the U.S., commencing with a game against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15.
