Every day, at the Oshawa Executive Airport, Stephen Wilcox, the manager, observes individuals gathering outside the security fence to admire the aircraft. According to Wilcox, families come with their children and grandparents to witness the magic of aviation. On May 2, during Doors Open in Oshawa, these families will have the opportunity to interact with pilots and gain insights into aviation up close.
The airport, originally part of a World War Two training base, has evolved into one of the top twenty busiest airports in Canada. During Doors Open, the Canadian Forces will showcase a Chinook helicopter at the airport, with the presence of paratroopers from the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada.
Mayor Dan Carter of Oshawa expressed his intention to attend the event himself, emphasizing that Doors Open offers residents a chance to engage with the community and explore Oshawa’s heritage. Visitors to Oshawa City Hall can view an exhibition by Friends of Second Marsh, highlighting the history and wildlife of the marsh, which spans 400 hectares and houses over 100 bird species.
For nature enthusiasts, Friends of Second Marsh will conduct bird watching hikes during Doors Open, starting at the Darlington Trail. Peter Taylor, the president of the organization, hopes that the exhibit will educate visitors about the marsh’s ecological significance and inspire them to appreciate nature.
Alternatively, those preferring indoor activities can enjoy an exclusive preview of the upcoming production of ‘Newsies’ at the Oshawa Little Theatre. The youth group will perform the show on May 15, accompanied by a live youth orchestra. Erin Mikaluk, the director of marketing at the theatre, mentioned that visitors during Doors Open can witness a rehearsal, including the orchestra, and view costumes from past productions.
Mikaluk highlighted the dedicated volunteer team behind each production at the Oshawa Little Theatre, emphasizing the extensive planning and effort that contribute to creating a full-scale theatrical experience.
