“Gordie Howe International Bridge to Open July 27”

Date:

The official announcement from the federal government confirms that the Gordie Howe International Bridge linking Ontario to Michigan is set to open on July 27. Canada and Michigan reached an agreement to open the bridge, supported by the U.S. government, as detailed in a news release issued by the federal Department of Housing, Infrastructure, and Communities in the evening.

The release outlined collaborative measures between Canada and the United States, focusing on toll governance, transparency, and investments in the region. It also mentioned the establishment of a 15-year economic development fund linked to a portion of profits generated by bridge operations. Additionally, the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority will work together with the U.S. government on toll-rate adjustments.

According to a senior Canadian government source, Canada will receive 50% of toll profits during the first 15 years of the bridge’s operation, with the remaining half allocated to a regional economic development fund. Any proposed toll changes exceeding 10% or falling below regional averages will require U.S. approval.

Spanning approximately 2.4 kilometers across the Detroit River, the six-lane cable-stayed bridge connects Windsor, Ontario, to Detroit, Michigan. Named in honor of Canadian hockey legend Gordie Howe, who notably played for the Detroit Red Wings for 25 seasons, the bridge construction, primarily funded by Canada, commenced in 2018.

The opening ceremony initially scheduled for June 12 was postponed at the request of the United States to resolve outstanding matters. Former U.S. President Donald Trump had previously demanded certain ownership conditions for the bridge, leading to negotiations and delays in the opening. However, a revised deal was later agreed upon, allowing the bridge’s opening to proceed on the agreed date.

The toll bridge, a joint venture between Canada and Michigan, aims to alleviate traffic congestion at the existing Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, facilitating smoother cross-border travel for residents and enhancing commercial trade between Detroit and Windsor.
