In the heart of downtown Brandon, Katty Pakbin is determined to boost the city’s core by honoring its heritage and potential. Pakbin, along with her sister Esther, has dedicated themselves to Red Cat Dessert & Teahouse, situated in the Town Centre. Originally from Iran, Pakbin arrived in Brandon in 2023 and emphasizes the significance of downtown Brandon as the city’s focal point.
Belonging to a growing cohort of immigrant entrepreneurs contributing to the city’s downtown, Pakbin aims to advocate for increased foot traffic in the inner city and highlight its appeal to visitors. Similarly, Jayesh Maisuria, a second-generation barber from India, showcases his commitment to the core by operating Jaysh Barbershop, which he opened last September.
Maisuria, noting initial skepticism about opening a business downtown due to safety concerns, has successfully attracted customers who now recognize the area’s safety and convenience. Through collaboration with neighboring businesses like restaurants and a dental office, Maisuria and others are collectively driving more visitors to the district.
Acknowledging the vital role of support for newcomers in establishing businesses downtown, Emmanuel Ahaneku, the executive director of the Brandon Downtown Development Corporation, underscores the significance of grants and programs that facilitate access to capital for immigrant entrepreneurs. Ahaneku emphasizes the impact of targeted grant initiatives in attracting and retaining businesses in the core, fostering growth and confidence in downtown revitalization.
While immigrant entrepreneurs play a pivotal role in the core’s transformation, challenges persist in dispelling stereotypes and enhancing the district’s appeal. Ahaneku stresses the importance of increasing foot traffic, bolstering security measures, and enhancing overall aesthetics to attract more businesses and visitors to downtown Brandon.
Nadiia Buzhor, owner of BoujoreN Tailoring Studio and an immigrant from Ukraine, echoes the sentiment of showcasing the district’s potential through her business. Buzhor envisions a more diverse array of businesses in the core to attract a wider demographic, particularly families, and drive further economic growth in downtown Brandon.
Pakbin, optimistic about the city’s potential, envisions downtown Brandon evolving into a flourishing tourism destination, drawing in numerous visitors to experience its rich history and charm. She encourages continued investment and appreciation for downtown Brandon as a valuable legacy for future generations.
