Lil Nas X recently opened up about his journey with bipolar disorder and time spent in rehab, following an incident involving Los Angeles police officers last summer. The pop star revealed on Instagram that he has been in rehab, sought therapy and medication, and emphasized the challenges he faces as a Black, gay, and bipolar individual.
Although not directly addressing the charges from the Los Angeles incident, Lil Nas X expressed optimism about his progress, stating that he is feeling better, creating music freely, and embracing a more positive outlook on life. He also teased upcoming music releases, the first in over a year.
The altercation with the police occurred when Lil Nas X, then 26-year-old Montero Lamar Hill, was found walking nearly naked in the San Fernando Valley in August 2025. He allegedly charged at officers, resulting in injuries to three of them. After a brief jail stay, he was released on bail and pleaded not guilty to felony charges.
In a subsequent Instagram video, the artist acknowledged the challenging days following the incident but assured his fans that he would be okay. He later entered a mental health diversion program, which, if successfully completed, would lead to the dismissal of the felony charges against him.
Lil Nas X, known for his hit song “Old Town Road,” has faced both acclaim and controversy throughout his career. The track sparked discussions about race and genre in music, reaching the top of the charts despite initial challenges. The artist’s open declaration of his sexuality and provocative social media presence have often stirred debates and criticism, including controversies involving “Satan shoes” and devil-themed music videos.
His music and artistic choices, particularly in his album “Montero,” reflect his personal journey and struggles with self-acceptance and sexual identity. Despite the controversies, Lil Nas X continues to create music, with an EP released in 2025 and an upcoming album titled “Dreamboy” in the works.
