“Mark Carney Expected to Be Named Canada’s Bilingual Governor General”

Date:

The upcoming appointment of Canada’s next governor general is set to be revealed by the prime minister on Tuesday, according to information obtained by CBC News sources. It is anticipated that the chosen candidate, Mark Carney, will possess fluency in both English and French. Sources have indicated that the appointee will be a female candidate.

The official announcement of the new governor general occurs subsequent to receiving the King’s formal approval of the prime minister’s recommendation. This selection marks a significant decision for Carney since assuming office last year. The current governor general, Mary Simon, is concluding her five-year term in the vice-regal position at Rideau Hall.

Simon made history as the first Indigenous governor general in Canada. As she and her husband, Whit Fraser, prepare to depart Rideau Hall, her tenure has been dedicated to promoting reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, advocating for mental health destigmatization, embracing diversity, and environmental conservation.

Although Simon is proficient in English and Inuktitut, her lack of fluency in French has drawn criticism during her term. The government allocated over $52,000 for 324 hours of French language classes for Simon, who faced more than 1,300 official complaints related to her appointment in 2021. However, a ruling in 2022 by commissioner Raymond Théberge concluded that the nomination process did not contravene federal bilingualism legislation.

Carney, in a recent interview with Radio-Canada, affirmed that the next governor general would be fully bilingual in both English and French. Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson defended Simon’s linguistic capabilities while emphasizing the importance of French proficiency for the King’s representative in Canada.

Traditionally, governors general serve a five-year term, although the duration can vary. David Johnston held office for seven years, while Julie Payette resigned during her third year due to findings of a toxic workplace environment at Rideau Hall. Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reintroduced an advisory committee for vice-regal appointments to recommend Simon after criticism over the lack of committee involvement in Payette’s appointment.

The Prime Minister’s Office has yet to address inquiries from CBC News regarding whether Carney utilized the advisory committee for his recommendation.
