Long before social media algorithms influenced your music choices, MusiquePlus was a key tastemaker in Quebec culture. Remember the iconic glass studio at Ste-Catherine and Bleury in Montreal? The enthusiastic crowds of fans outside, the vibrant VJs on your TV screen, and the music videos that determined what you listened to?
Well, get ready for a wave of nostalgia. The once-popular MusiquePlus TV channel is making a comeback in a new form as an influencer. TikTok recently announced a partnership with MusiquePlus to relaunch the brand exclusively on the app.
In their first video announcing the news, MusiquePlus emphasized continuity with the past by stating, “New generation, same DNA” in French. This move mirrors the reinvigoration of MuchMusic, MusiquePlus’s sister channel, which found success on TikTok in 2021 with over five million followers.
The revival of MusiquePlus on TikTok aims to introduce a new generation of VJs and creators, focusing on showcasing music, culture, and entertainment to amplify Quebec’s creative voices. The channel’s original mission in 1986 was to spotlight emerging local artists, helping talents like Véronique Cloutier, Geneviève Borne, Anne-Marie Withenshaw, Claude Rajotte, and Sonia Benezra gain recognition.
After being replaced by Elle Fictions in 2019, MusiquePlus is now back to reclaim its position as a vital platform for the French-speaking music scene. Maxime Rémillard, president of Remstar Media, one of the companies behind the relaunch, highlighted the channel’s significance in Quebec’s collective memory and its role in promoting local talent and culture.
TikTok’s selection as the platform for MusiquePlus’s revival reflects the app’s substantial influence in the music industry. Canadian artists like Tate McRae, bbno$, and the Beaches have seen their careers propelled by TikTok, with viral hits and millions of views attributed to the platform.
The new content for MusiquePlus’s comeback is being crafted by Attraction, Motion Entertainment, and Remstar, with nods to the channel’s rich history. The upcoming VJs, aged 20 to 35, will be unveiled upon the page’s launch on June 11. These VJs, already active on social media, particularly TikTok, will bring a fresh perspective to the brand while honoring its legacy.
The return of MusiquePlus on TikTok signifies a fusion of past success and future potential, capturing the essence of Quebec’s vibrant music and cultural scene for a new era of listeners.
