“National Canadian Film Day to Honor Late Actor Graham Greene”

Date:

As Canada celebrates the contributions of its filmmakers and the narratives within its cinema, various special events are planned to pay tribute to the life and impact of Graham Greene, a revered actor from Six Nations. Greene, a member of the Oneida community from Six Nations of the Grand River in southern Ontario, passed away at the age of 73 last autumn.

National Canadian Film Day, observed on April 15 and co-sponsored by CBC, is a nationwide initiative dedicated to honoring Canadian cinema. Communities throughout the country will host screenings of Canadian films as part of this celebration.

To commemorate Greene’s legacy, a series of film screenings will take place, including a presentation of his movie “Clearcut” (1991) at The Woodland Cultural Centre in Brantford, Ontario. The screening is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. on April 15 and will be attended by members of Greene’s family and the Six Nations community. Additionally, the event will feature the screening of the short documentary “Graham Greene: I’m Just Me” by Tara Johns.

Screenings of “Clearcut” and Greene’s acclaimed film “Seeds” will also be held in Toronto, Ottawa, and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Over his nearly five-decade career, Greene took on numerous roles in both film and television productions, showcasing his talent and versatility.

Acknowledged with prestigious honors, Greene was a recipient of the Order of Canada and received a nomination for an Academy Award for his role in “Dances with Wolves.” His contributions to television acting were recognized with the Earle Grey lifetime achievement award at the Canadian Screen Awards in 2004 and a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement in 2025.
