“Tech Giant Apple Opposes Canada’s Encryption Bill C-22”

Date:

Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree is under pressure to revise his lawful access bill as concerns mount over its potential impact on digital encryption and cyber vulnerabilities. Bill C-22 aims to streamline access to Canadians’ private information and communication interception for law enforcement and intelligence purposes. The proposed legislation would mandate electronic service providers, likely including tech and telecommunication companies, to update their systems for easier data sharing with authorities and to retain metadata for up to one year.

Apple has entered the debate, highlighting the risks associated with weakening encryption under Bill C-22. The tech giant emphasized its commitment to assisting law enforcement while cautioning against creating vulnerabilities that could be exploited by hackers and hostile entities.

The government denies seeking back doors in the bill, with officials asserting that the legislation is encryption-neutral and does not mandate the creation of vulnerabilities. However, Apple contends that the bill could lead to compromising encryption standards. The company’s stance aligns with its commitment to user privacy and data security, stating it will not compromise on encryption integrity.

In response to criticisms, a spokesperson for the minister refuted claims of introducing back doors through the bill, emphasizing the legislation’s alignment with privacy rights and cybersecurity principles. The statement underscored that similar lawful access frameworks exist globally, suggesting that complying with such standards is not new to multinational corporations.

Meanwhile, discussions in parliamentary committees have raised calls for clearer definitions and safeguards around encryption in the bill. Minister Anandasangaree has indicated openness to considering proposed amendments from opposition members to address encryption concerns and enhance data protection measures.
